The S1 Digital headset is an innovative aviation headset with fully adaptive digital noise cancellation. At the push of a button, Sennheiser's exclusive new NoiseGard™ / digital noise-canceling accurately analyzes surrounding noise and automatically adjusts the noise-cancellation levels to the appropriate settings. In this way, the S1 Digital offers optimum protection for the pilot's hearing.
The Sennheiser S1 is designed in tandem with BMW DesignWorks USA, gives you maximum control over noise levels in the cockpit, so you can focus on the joy of flying. Design features like adjustable headband contact pressure and a special “comfort zone” for glasses ensure you stay comfortable. And with a Bluetooth interface, clear voice transmission and a customizable treble boost function, you’ll never miss a word.
Sennheiser S1 Digital NoiseGardTM ANR
At the push of a button, the S1’s exclusive NoiseGard digital technology accurately analyzes the cockpit’s current noise levels to achieve superior noise cancellation during all phases of flight—from take-off to cruise to landing. The graphic below shows the real world frequency response of the cockpit noise in a single engine prop. The top line shows the cockpit noise without any headset. The second line is the cockpit noise heard using a standard passive headset. The third line shows the noise cancellation using a top of the line standard ANR headset, and the bottom line is the noise with the adaptive, digital, NoiseGard found in the Sennheiser S1 Headset.
The wideband noise reduction is about 30 dB and peak noise reduction about 38 db. And, you will notice that the frequency response is entirely flat with the S1 Digital Headset virtually eliminating the dangerous peaks found in other sound environments. The full potential of the S1 Digital is a peak noise reduction of up to 50 dB! The NoiseGard Digital found in the Sennheiser S1 Digital works to cancel noise up to 3000 hertz whereas traditional ANR system reach their full potential below 1000 hertz.
Smart Adapt Technology
Not all phases of flight sound the same. Other ANR headsets reduce noise the same way - whether you are in a full power climb or in a straight and level cruise. The Sennheiser S1 Digital takes a whole new approach to optimize the noise reduction for that exact point in time. The S1 Headset uses a microphone on both the outside of each ear cup and the inside of the each ear cup to sample the sounds being heard. These four microphones then combine those sounds using a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to cancel more noise than passive or traditional ANR headsets. The exclusive Smart Adapt button allows you to resample the current noise spectrum at any point in the flight to achieve the best possible reduction of noise. For example, you would use the Smart Adapt button during changes in flight phases such as taxi, take-off, climb, cruise, and decent. The Smart Adapt function also compensates for hair styles, eyeglasses, and head shape.
Peak Level Protection
Peak Level Protection is a technology that protects the ears from sudden loud sounds that may occur during communication with ATC. The official regulations state that the ears must be protected from sudden sound peaks above 137 db. The Sennheiser S1 Headset takes protective action at 110 dB and reduces volume peaks while stabilizing speech intelligibility.
Treble Boost Control
Sometimes pilots suffer from certain hearing deficiencies on higher frequencies that make it difficult to understand speech (Say Again?). The S1 helps improve speech intelligibility with an adjustable treble boost. Choose from three custom levels to achieve the clearest ATC transmissions.
Bluetooth Wireless and Audio Functions
The Sennheiser S1 Headset has integrated Bluetooth wireless capabilities to allow you to connect the headset to any Bluetooth equipped mobile phone or portable music player. The control box on the S1 Headset gives you remote access to all features of the mobile device if it supports the Bluetooth profile. With the S1 control box you can skip songs, pause, mute, increase or decrease the sound and more. The S1 Headset can also be used as a wireless headset for your mobile phone outside of the aircraft, for example to file a flight plan while standing on the tarmac.
Adjustable contact pressure
Sennheiser understands that not all heads are created equal. What may fit one person may be much too loose or tight on another person. Therefore, they have introduced adjustable contact pressure to provide the maximum comfort and best fit for virtually everyone! Each side of the S1 Headset offers three contact pressure adjustments-minimum, medium and high contact pressure.
Soft Ear Seals and Sunglass Comfort Zones
Anyone that has worn eyeglasses or sunglasses during flight knows that after a while you start to have discomfort where the ear cup presses on the temple of the glasses against your head. Sennheiser solved this problem with a special material on the ear cushions of the S1 Headset. On the areas where the glasses normally press against the temple, Sennheiser has added a soft, perforated memory foam that is used to avoid uncomfortable contact pressure. And, because it is a special memory foam you are ensured the best possible seal when used with or without glasses. The result is a light and comfortable feeling with a great seal to block external noise.
Designed in Conjunction with BMW Group
DesignWorks
Sennheiser collaborated with BMW Group DesignWorks to create the ultimate pilot headset. BMW DesignWorks has a long and successful track record in the aviation industry. They created the interior design of the Embraer Phenom Jets and the Pilatus Jet and have also worked with Piper, Airbus, Boeing Business Jets, Fairchild Dornier, and others. Besides the overall stylish, modern, look of the Sennheiser S1 Headset, unique design features include a removable plate on the right ear cup that allows you to personalize your headset with your name, company logo or anything else to make your S1 Headset unique for you! A customizable name plate is available for ordering after you receive your S1 headset. The Sennheiser S1 also features a unique folding feature that allows you to fold it into a compact bundle for convenient storage.
